GTA 6 Has No Disc at Launch. What That Means for You
Buying a boxed copy expecting a disc you can lend, resell, or install offline.
Rockstar is reported to have confirmed there will be no Blu-ray game disc for GTA 6 at launch. The physical boxed version contains a download code instead.
The box is real. The disc is not.
What actually changes
- You cannot lend the game to a friend by handing over a disc.
- The second-hand market for the game effectively does not exist, because a redeemed code is spent.
- You still need to download the full game, so a slow or capped connection is still a problem.
- The box becomes a collectible object rather than a way to play.
Who this hurts
People on slow rural connections lose the one workaround they had, which was installing the bulk of the game from a disc and patching afterwards.
If that is you, preload week matters more than it does for anyone else. Start on day one of the preload window and give yourself the full seven days.
If your connection is slow, buy digital and preload early. A boxed copy gives you no download advantage and adds a shipping delay.
Is this confirmed or rumour?
This is reported consistently by multiple reputable outlets covering Rockstar statements. We have flagged it as reported rather than dressing it up as something we read on the Newswire ourselves.
If Rockstar publishes anything that changes it, this page changes the same day.
