GTA 6 Preload: Free Up Space Before You Get Caught Out

Updated 2026-09-01
How this gets you wasted

Launch night arrives, your drive is full, and you spend it deleting games instead of playing one.

Preload is reported to begin on 12 November 2026, one week before launch, starting at midnight local time.

The point of preload is simple. The game copies to your console early so that on launch day you unlock and play instead of watching a progress bar.

How much space do you need?

Rockstar has not published an official download size. That is the honest position.

Coverage has pointed at clearing roughly 250GB to be comfortable. Treat that as a safety margin somebody sensible suggested, not a number Rockstar confirmed.

Do this now, not on 12 November

Freeing space takes minutes. Re-downloading a game you deleted by mistake takes hours. Sort it while there is no pressure.

Storage prep checklist

  • Check your current free space today and write the number down.
  • Delete games you have not opened in six months. You can reinstall them.
  • Clear old capture footage and saved clips, they add up faster than people expect.
  • If you are close to the line, an internal NVMe on PS5 or a Series X expansion card is the fix. Buy it before November, not during the rush.
  • External USB drives can store next-gen games but cannot run them. Useful for parking other titles, not for GTA 6 itself.

If you bought a boxed copy

Boxed copies are reported to contain a download code rather than a game disc, so the same preload window applies to you. Redeem the code and start the download.
